A celebration of the self-taught artist, Who-Fest, covers Renaissance Park with art and music this weekend.

“It’s really soulful art,” said Hailey Moses, a 20-year-old Guilford College (N.C.) student who bought paintings on Saturday while visiting with her mother, psychologist Carol Lewis, 48, of Gainesville, Fla.

Nearly 60 artists appear at the festival.

Musical performers include Roger Alan Wade, Kofi Mawuko’s Ghanaian Band and Land Camera.

Who-Fest supports “outside and visionary art,” said festival organizer David Smotherman, owner of Winder Binder Gallery of Folk Art on Frazier Avenue.

Who Ha Da Da Artist Collective and Chattanooga’s Shaking Ray Levi Society co-sponsored the event.

The folk artists at Who-Fest are typically not formally trained, said Beth Gumnick, a folk painter and teacher at Chattanooga’s Baylor School.

“We create for many reasons — it’s a passion, or a form of therapy — and we learn as we go,” she said.

Who-Fest offers a rare chance for local folk artists to show and sell their work, said Mort Overton, a copper sculptor from Dalton, Ga.

“This is my first art festival. It’s a step up for me,” he said.

Mr. Smotherman said the group’s organizers produced a quality event on a limited budget of $7,500.

His mission, he added, is to expose Chattanoogans to rarely seen local and regional folk artists.

“This is a niche that gets lost some times,” Mr. Smotherman said. “There are so many good folk artists in this area, there just has to be something like this.”

Times-Free Press Weekend Section Article

Very nice article, the only thing that I felt is little out of context was the part about “creating only for money”…it makes it sound like I was downing some artists as people only being in it for money. The actual conversation was more along the lines of that while professionally trained artists are in to it more as a profession (ie. making money), most folk artists are/were “compelled” to paint (visionary). Oh well, not sure that makes any sense. :)

Special Thanks: Promotion of Who-Fest [08]

I have been struck by how many different groups have helped spread the word about Who-Fest this year, so much so that I wanted to take a quick moment to thanks some of them…

Of course, all our artists, friends and patrons…thanks for forwarding our press releases.

We have also had great luck generating web traffic to this site from emails sent out by the following…the Southeast Tennessee Tourism Development Office, the Chattanooga Downtown Partnership, the Friends of the Festival, the Association of Visual Arts, Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Theatre Center, the Shaking Ray Levi Society, DetourArt, and WGOW.

I am sure that there are others that I am not aware, but I wanted to at least make a point to thanks those who are helping to spread the word of Who-Fest!

It is heartening to see how much support the different arts’ groups in this town support each other.

Bucketman is in the house!

Danny “Bucketman” Hoskinson will be making his way down from his secure, undisclosed, location near the Ocoee. We hear he will also be debuting a new art car at Who-Fest [08].

And we have another last minute addition…one of our favorite coppersmith’s, Mont Overton.

Now if we could just figure out a way to get Eric Legge’s van running, this show would be pretty near close to perfect.

I screen captured the article…
